- Prof S K Thorat has been awarded Padma Shri
Prof S K Thorat, the Chairman of UGC and Managing Trustee of IIDS,
has been awarded Padma Shri during 59th Republic Day celebrations
held on January 26, 2008. The award is for his outstanding contribution
to the literature on Economics of discrimination and Social Exclusion.

- Cordaid Financial Officer visits IIDS
Ms. Sabina Atzei, Cordaid Financial Officer paid a visit to IIDS'
Office for Publication and Dissemination on 28 March 2007 to discuss
the programme's progress and also to asses it's financial situation.
Ms. Atzei took a overall tour of the office and met with the staff
members. In a crux, she was thoroughly impressed by the work carried
out by the Publication unit and conveyed her best wishes to the
unit's staff.

USA, visits IIDS to conduct a collaborative project on Dalit Art
and Imagery from 17-29 October 2006.

- Sukhadeo Thorat UGC Chief
New Delhi: Sukhadeo Thorat, a member of the University Grants
Commission (UGC), was on Monday made its Chairman. A professor
of Economics at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), he will
hold the office for a term of five years.
Dr. Thorat will take charge from officiating Chairman V. N. Rajasekharan
Pillai. The post fell vacant on September 27, 2005 following the
superannuation of incumbent Arun Nigavekar. A Ph.D in Economics
from JNU , his area of research has been in the field of agricultural
development, poverty, labour studies, caste and economic discrimination,
particularly in the labour market, and the economic problems of
the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes…
