| Main Focus |
| The Institute is set up to fill the vacuum and gaps in our knowledge on the issues of social exclusion and discrimination associated with caste, untouchability, ethnicity, religious status with a focus on marginalized groups in the Indian society.
The focus of the Institute in terms of research, policy and training is centered around the studies on the caste, untouchability, ethnicity and other identity-based discriminations in their interface, and inter-linkages with the economy, society, polity, education, religion, history, culture, arts, media and other aspects, both in the national, as well as, the international context.
In the national context, the focus is on India, and in the international context, it is centered on all the countries, wherein, social institutions similar to that of caste system exist. |

| Keeping in view the multidimensionality of the issue of social exclusion and discrimination, much needs to be done.
The IIDS in its first vision document visualized the following research programs: |

| Economic Studies Division |
| It will focus on the studies on economic and market discrimination associated with caste, untouchability, ethnicity and religious identity, caste-gender interface, consequences of economic discrimination on poverty and deprivation, and economic development of the marginalized communities among other aspects such as the economic status of discriminated groups, studies on policies against discrimination in India and other countries etc. |

| Social Studies Division |
| This program focuses on studies on social discrimination, untouchability, and discriminations based on other group identities in civil, cultural, political, educational and social spheres, evaluation of legal and other policies, and national and international instruments of intervention and development. |

| Politics, Law and Governance Studies Division |
| This section focuses on studies on the Dalit political and social movements, efforts by Dalit civil society organizations and NGOs, measures undertaken by the government, legal measures against discrimination, and affirmative action policies for political participation and representation. |

| History, Philosophy and Religious Studies Division |
| This division will undertake studies on the history of Dalit and minority problems, and philosophical attempts by them and others to develop ideologies for equality. The focus of this division will be on the efforts of the Dalit writers in developing ideologies for emancipation, so as to highlight the perspective from within. |

| Education, Literature, Culture and Art Studies Division |
| This division will focus on studies related to discrimination, education, culture, Dalit arts and imagery, the efforts by Dalits to develop human rights education, and literature. |

| Gender Studies Division |
| This division will focus on discrimination related to gender and will undertaken studies on discrimination faced by Dalit women based on their caste and other identities, social movements by Dalit women, social and economic status of the Dalit women, problem of violence perpetuated against them, and on issues related their empowerment. |

| Knowledge Empowerment, Training, Dissemination of Information and Publications Division |
| Based on literature, data and information, this division will focus on undertaking activities to empower the civil society organizations, NGOs, activists, funding organizations, and the various sections of the government and legislature etc, which are engaged on the issues of empowerment of the discriminated groups, through dissemination of information by books, conferences, workshops, seminars, exhibitions, lectures, and audio and visual aids etc.
These divisions constitute the medium and long term vision for the development of the Indian Institute of Dalit Studies. |
