Dr. Mala Mukherjee is an urban and social geographer currently serving as Assistant Professor at the Indian Institute of Dalit Studies (IIDS), New Delhi. She holds a Ph.D. in Geography from Jawaharlal Nehru University, where her doctoral research examined deprivation and spatial vulnerabilities in low-income neighborhoods of Kolkata. With over a decade of experience in academic and policy research, her work focuses on urban marginalization, caste and gender-based exclusion, and access to public services.

Dr. Mukherjee has led and collaborated on several national-level studies supported by the Indian Council of Social Science Research, National Commission for Women, and various state governments. Her recent work includes contributions to Karnataka’s State Education Policy Commission, where she conducted spatial analysis of school infrastructure. She has also worked on projects examining the impact of COVID-19 on informal workers, digital access for marginalized women, and the socio-economic status of Dalit communities across Indian states. Her research is widely published, including in The Lancet, Journal of Social Inclusion Studies,and Gender Forum. She has contributed to edited volumes published by Springer, Routledge, and Oxford University Press on themes such as caste, gender-based violence, urban informality, and health inequity.

Dr. Mukherjee has presented her work at international academic forums in the UK, France, Thailand, and Indonesia. She was selected as a UN delegate to the Global Sustainable Development Report workshop in Jakarta (2019) and continues to be actively involved in research training, public consultations, and academic outreach. Her core research interests include- Caste gender intersectionality issues, urban inequality,migration, digital inequality, and urban planning, slum studies.
